Particualte filtration is the filtering of solid, undisssolved particles from water. The nauture and size of solid particles can vary greatly. Some examples are clay particles, sand, organic debris, Iron oxide and Manganese oxide. Particlate filters can be used wether on their own, or more commonly, as part of a filtration system. Iron and Manganese filter systems for example sometimes use a backwashable particulate filter. The type and size of filter will depend on the water quality and flow rate. Contact assemblies are used to draw air into the water supply, allowing them to mix and have a specified contact time before either going through the remainder of the filtration system or straight to service. Mixing air with water allows the oxygen in the water to oxidise certain components of the water. The most common use is to oxidise soluble Iron and Manganese into to their insoluble oxides. Ammonium, Nitrites and Hydrogen Sulphide can also be treated using oxidation. We can offer assistance in this area.

This water then dissolves chalk and / or metallic deposits present in the local rock strata, resulting in ground and borehole water containing elements that would not normally be present in mains water. Activated Carbon is a specialised filter media used principally for removing Chlorine or organic compounds from water. Most of the activated Carbon used for water treatment is made from baking crushed coconut shell until it produces a charcoal type material. This is then activated with high pressure steam, leaving the carbon with many minute active pores on it’s surface. The ability of Activated Carbon to remove contaminates from raw water is dependent upon the length of time the water spends in contact with the media. The presence of Nitrates in water causes many problems, ranging from blue baby syndrome (if fed to
babies under 6 months old) to contamination of poultry if used as feed water for farmed birds. The
source of Nitrates in ground water is usually from farming fertilisers. The EEC permitted maximum is

Ultra Violet light is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength that is shorter than visible light but longer than x-rays. This disrupts the DNA of micro-organisms, preventing them from replicating and thus de-activing their potential for infection.
