Water softeners work by a process known as ion exchange. The hard water passes through a resin column inside a pressure vessel. The resin removes the Calcium and Magnesium ions and exchanges them for Sodium. When the resin becomes exhausted it is regenerated by drawing a brine solution through the resin which reverses the process. The unwanted Calcium and Magnesium is then flushed down the drain. Regeneration takes around 1 hour and is repeated as often as necessary by either a timeclock at 2 am or by a meter which triggers the regeneration when the resin has been exhausted. No maintenance is required from the customer other than the regular checking and replenishing of the salt level.

Particulate filtration is the filtering of solid, undissolved particles from water. The nature and size of solid particles can vary greatly. Some examples are clay particles, sand, organic debris, Iron oxide and Manganese oxide. Particulate filters can be used whether on their own, or more commonly, as part of a filtration system. Iron and Manganese filter systems for example sometimes use a back washable particulate filter. The type and size of filter will depend on the water quality and flow rate. We can offer assistance in this area.

Contact assemblies are used to draw air into the water supply, allowing them to mix and have a specified contact time before either going through the remainder of the filtration system or straight to service. Mixing air with water allows the oxygen in the water to oxidise certain components of the water. The most common use is to oxidise soluble Iron and Manganese into to their insoluble oxides. Ammonium, Nitrites and Hydrogen Sulphide can also be treated using oxidation. We can offer assistance in this area.

When rain falls, the water has a naturally aggressive, slightly acidic nature. This water then dissolves chalk and / or metallic deposits present in the local rock strata, resulting in ground and borehole water containing elements that would not normally be present in mains water. Contaminants such as Iron and Manganese can cause problems such as poor tasting (and potentially harmful) drinking water & staining of appliances and equipment. We can offer assistance in this area.

When rain falls, the water has a naturally aggressive, slightly acidic nature. This water then dissolves chalk and/or metallic deposits present in the local rock strata which lead to the contamination of the water. This results in ground and borehole water containing a number of elements that would not otherwise be present in mains water. These contaminants (such as Iron and Manganese) then cause problems when the water is put into use. We can offer assistance in this area.

The presence of Nitrates in water causes many problems, ranging from blue baby syndrome (if fed to babies less than 6 months old) to contamination of poultry if used as feed water for farmed birds. The source of Nitrates in ground water is usually from farming fertilisers. The EEC permitted maximum is50mg/l with an advisory maximum of 25mg/l. We can offer assistance in this area.

Activated Carbon is a specialised filter media used principally for removing Chlorine or organic compounds from water. Most of the activated Carbon used for water treatment is made from baking crushed coconut shell until it produces a charcoal type material. This is then activated with high pressure steam, leaving the carbon with many minute active pores on its surface. The ability of Activated Carbon to remove contaminates from raw water is dependent upon the length of time the water spends in contact with the media. Therefore sizing the filters correctly is crucial for effective performance. We can offer assistance in this area.

Private water supplies may contain micro-organisms that can be harmful if consumed. Ultra Violet light is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength that is shorter than visible light but longer than x-rays. This disrupts the DNA of micro-organisms, preventing them from replicating and thus de-activing their potential for infection. Ultra Violet systems provide a safe, clean and economical method for sterilisation of water supplies. We can offer assistance in this area.
